What I've been reading so far this year....

Shanghai Girls
Pearl and May are sisters living in 1930s China. They endure a tragedy that puts them on a path to America to start life from the ground up. Its a story that really tests what is important in life. I love the emotion you get from this book. This will be a classic. I read the sequel as well which ultimately had me seek out all of Lisa See's work. She has never disappointed me!

The Dressmaker
I found this one at Barnes and Noble while browsing. I saw Titanic and thought, Yes! Buying it! Main character, Tess is a seamstress who is a passenger on the Titanic. An amazing opportunity falls into her lap that leads her down a path of many crazy twists! Love, betrayal, history! Its all here! I would love to see this one turn into a movie!

The Shack
This book has been constantly recommended to me, I finally grabbed a copy. Mack is a father who has faced a great tragedy. He is contacted by the holy trinity who spends time with him at the very place he fears most. This book gives a great perspective on life and one's relationship with God no matter what your religion may be. This was a fast and easy read. Nice and uplifting!

The Matched Series
I finished the last book in the serious, Reached. This was my least favorite book. Kind of the same situation as The Hunger Games for me. The first two I couldn't put down, they are intense and mysterious. The last focused on saving everything and big wars, etc. This has nothing to do with the author or the story, it has everything to do with my taste. I'm just not into that stuff, but they have to happen in these post apocalyptic slash utopian society stories. As a whole the serious is amazing and I breezed through them wanting more! They were recommended to me after reading HG and actually kept my interest just as much! Ally Conie is truly gifted and I hope to see more from her soon!

Gone Girl
Holy wow! I have always said I can't stand when books say "couldn't put it down" but I could so put it down. In the case of Gone Girl, I could NOT for the life of me put it down! (Well unless my kids needed me of course. Haha) Nick comes home one day to find his wife missing and his house wrecked. You are on a chase from that point on and what I love is that as a reader who predicts a lot, I did not see the twist coming at all! Love the style in which it was written! I can't stop, loved it all! Wow! I will be reading Gillian's other works pronto!

The Witch's Daughter
This book was fun. I like stories about witches and I like how this one went back in forth to past and present which kept me gripped on the story. It was easy to read and kept my interest, however, I honestly thought I had a twist figured out and I thought it was going to go down this crazy surprising road, but then all questions ended up being simply answered. This isn't making sense and it won't until you read it. I just felt bummed that there was no surprise really, no twist, just oh yeah! So and so DID do it, the person all the signs pointed to. Ok. I'll still be reading Paula's other books because it was laid back and fun.
